Understanding the Software Development Lifecycle SDLC Models: Critcal Sucess Factors

September 3, 2008

The first thing to understand about the SDLC is there is not just one. There are many and depending on your organization which model you choose will make all the difference this primer goes through the most popular choices but be aware there are many others out there.

Deciding which of the various lifecycle models is best for your project can seem like a daunting task, but it needn’t be. First, my experience and that of many of my colleagues indicates that as long as you have taken care to select a lifecycle model that you and your team believe to be appropriate to your project, your team can be successful with it— provided you are willing to be flexible in its use, adapt it to your team’s needs in a disciplined manner, and monitor its effectiveness throughout the project.

So what are the keys to success for choosing a sucessful model

  • Letting the project’s character dictate just what kind of a project plan was used

  • Not panicking into a slam dunk mode, but taking the time to analyze what needed to be done

  • Getting concurrence from the rest of the development team

  • Monitoring how well we were executing the plan

  • Being flexible enough to replan almost continuously to accommodate unforeseen circumstances
